The concept of these pieces stems from John-Marshall's admiration for the Italian Renaissance, which revolutionized our understanding of visual perspective through narrative art. The stories that shaped JM’s adolescence were the larger than life characters of the Wild West that had a strict and sometimes deadly moral code. These Western stories in film are often simplified to a hero, a villain and a damsel. This series, Quicker Than My
Shadow, plays with perspective by casting a flat black shadow behind each of these characters to bring depth to each image in a contemporary way. Each character embodies the “fastest gun in the west” lore by being quicker than the shadow cast behind them. As the title piece of my upcoming show, this triptych notably incorporates the first self portrait of JM is the most distilled representation of his entire body of work. This triptych was conceptualized almost 2 years ago and required about 8 months to produce. The process involved a photoshoot with hired actors (including the artist) and period specific clothing and props, but that was just the beginning. JM pioneered the construction of these wall reliefs and is proud to call this a unique medium for art. He combined Renaissance era techniques with modern tools and materials to create pieces that will surely catch your eye and your imagination.
